My last blog was on July 3rd and since then, I’ve had many new experiences, not the kind I would have planned on but the kind that have made me appreciate my faith, the strength of prayer and every member of my family more. It all began in Yosemite. Our family enjoys camping together. We’ve camped at the beaches for years – Doheny State Beach is a favorite and we’ve camped at Zion National Park and back in 2009 in Yosemite. This year, we had reservations at the Upper Pines Campground in Yosemite Valley. This means that several months ago, we set a strategy – choosing a week and a range of campsites and gave everyone the date and time that the coveted and hard to get reservations would open. On a Sunday morning in March we all woke up early and had our hoped for reservations chosen on the National Park Service Reservation website www.recreation.gov . At exactly 7:00 a.m., the moment the reservations opened, we all pressed enter. I had two computers logged in, kept pressing enter on bo...
April, Sarah and I signed up for the Fontana Half Marathon in June. So, with that, we have to train and train and train. Sarah and Heidi trained and ran the St. George Marathon back in 2003 before either of them began their families. I've run several 5Ks before and 3.2 miles is about the farthest I've ever run up until last week. I found a half marathon training plan on-line which we're making a decent attempt at following. Until Saturday, all the runs on the plan have been within our comfort zones of 4 miles or under. This was the first week we plotted out and ran a route over 5 miles. Heidi, April and I met at Heidi's house out in Perris on Saturday and began our big circle route . Once we reached a certain point, you just have to finish....that's why I like big circles better than "out and back" routes. The five miles took us an hour because I'm still pretty slow at the run and I still need to build in walking breaks now and again -- e...
All my kids, their spouses and I spent an entire day hiking up The Narrows in Zion National Park. This is something I've been wanting to do for years. Its great to struggle up through the water while enjoying the colorful, tall narrow canyon walls. Its such a refreshing break from all the hustle and bustle from my usual Southern California lifestyle. Danny and I spent another afternoon tubing down the Virgin River as well. And, several of us hiked up Angels Landing. What a great accomplishment that was...its something I didn't even know about until my jogging friend, Susan Holland, mentioned that she had done it with her siblings a few weeks earlier. I thought, "If Susan can do it, so can I". I am so glad I had the confidence to make it up there and the courage just to hang on to the chains toward the end of the hike. Next summer, Half Dome!
Finally you are blogging... yipee... keep it up...cute pics
